This
mushroom can be as tall as 25 cm and as wide as 25 cm. Spore
powder is rusty brown, ochre brown. It is one of the largest fungi of Latvia. It grows in nutrient-rich soils along
forest tracks and ditches from September to November. Its surface is velvet-like
and slightly grainy. It contains small amount of hydrocyanic acid. It is quite common in Latvia.
During the Soviet rule, Latvia's soil was being massively enriched with
nitrates, which facilitated the growth of this mushroom. It is slightly poisonous
and can cause stomach-ache.
Par šīs sēnes lietošanu
uzturā literatūrā ir
pretrunīgas ziņas. Zināms, ka tā var izraisīt gremošanas traucējumus. Iespējams, ka
šī sēne ir jānovāra un ūdens jānolej, jo svaiga tā ir vāji
indīga. Latvijā ir reģistrēti saindēšanās gadījumi
ar šo sēni.
