Milzu apaļpūpēdis

Syn.: Globaria bovista; Lasiosphaeria gigantea; Calvatia gigantea
English name: Giant Puffball
Deutsche Name: Riesen-Bovist

The diameter of this fungus can reach up to about 70 cm in Latvia. This is one of the largest fungi in this country. Spore powder is dark brown. When young, this fungus has white flesh and surface. As it becomes older, it produces brown spores inside it. This fungus prefers nutrient-rich soils. Usually it grows in grass in open places (parks and gardens, for example) from August to October. It is quite common in Latvia. Edible when fried, and tasty when young and white.

This specimen has been photographed after having been moved away from its original location to a nearby one
where the same species had used to grow several years earlier
